Haty el-Geish

32 El-Falaki Street, Bab el Louk Cuisines: Arabic

About

Once a favorite of King Farouk himself, this old carnivores' hangout continues to offer good, hearty food to a dedicated clientele. Having undergone sobering renovations following the 1952 Revolution, there are few hints of the restaurant's glitzy past. White tablecloths are laid out neatly on the tables and service is polite, if a little slow. The short menu is big on meat - this is after all a grill house. Ribs, liver, kidney, kebab and the highly recommended kofta top the list. Chicken is absent from the menu but can be ordered as delicious shish tawouk sandwiches from the takeaway next door. The side dish menu is equally limited, but most entrees come with fresh vegetables anyway. Desserts include Om Ali, creme caramel, mahalabiyya and fruit salad.
