About
Sydney harbour has a number of islands that are open to the public. Probably the most popular ones are Fort Denison, Shark Island and Cockatoo Island.Fort Denison is the one just off Mrs Maquaries Point, right in front of the harbour bridge. It used to be a small but beautiful peak.Shark Island is an island further up the river that is the perfect place for a picnic on a nice day. Ferries run from Circular Quay, but its handy to book on busy days due to its popularity. Finally Cockatoo Island is the biggest island in the harbour. It has a number of historic features, but the best thing about this island is that you can camp on it. Get fantastic views and a strange experience camping in the middle of the city. This campground really gets busy, so book a long time in advance, especially for weekends
