Halldór Laxness Museum (Gljúfrasteinn)

About

Gljúfrasteinn, which became a museum in 2004, should interest most fans of the Nobel Prize-winning author. Halldór spent most of his adult life in this mid-20th-century country home, full of original furniture and artwork by close friends Jóhannes Kjarval, Svavar Guðnason, and Nina Tryggvadóttir. Halldór's well-polished 1968 Jaguar still sits in the driveway. The recommended 25-minute audio tour includes interview clips with Halldór and his wife, voiced over in English. Halldór was a fine pianist, and concerts are still held on his grand piano every Sunday at 4pm from June through August; tickets are only 400kr ($6.40/£3.20). Guests are encouraged to bring picnics and walk along the river. Bus 15 takes you from Reykjavík to central Mosfellsbær; from there bus 27 makes four trips daily to Laxnes Farm, which is a 10-minute walk from Gljúfrasteinn -- but you'll probably have to wait a few hours for the next bus back. (A horseback ride at Laxnes farm could round out your itinerary.) Another alternative, if you don't have a car, is the "Wonders of Tþingvellir" tour with Iceland Excursions (tel. 540-1313; www.icelandexcursions.is), which combines Gljúfrasteinn with Tþingvellir.
