Gulangyu Island

Gulangyu

About

Gulangyu, an islet now known for being a popular tourist destination for the Chinese, was originally a European trading colony established in the mid-19th century.  Gulangyu is known for its European architecture, carefully manicured gardens, and scenic views. The islet is known for its Disneyland-like, festive atmosphere. Hawkers sell snacks and maps with itineraries, while an industrious maintenance staff keeps the island spotlessly clean. The likeness is sharpened by the banning of any motorized vehicles or bicycles except for the recent addition of electric tourist shuttles that quietly taxi visitors across the island. Although the island was the base for the national hero Zheng Chengong during the Ming Dynasty, it eventually became a trading post for European nations after the Opium Wars of 1842. Western powers, including Americans, British, French, and the Japanese, built mansions, consulates, and churches here, in stark contrast to the mainland. After the Japanese occupation of the island in 1942 and subsequent resistance against Japan by the Chinese, the island was depopulated of its foreign dignitaries, yet the evidence of their lavish lifestyle remains. Gulangyu accommodates many visitors who are drawn to the island's scenery, museums, and other attractions. The Sun Rock, piano museums, scenic paths, food selections, and tranquil gardens figure largely into the island's role as a travel destination in Fujian.
