Grotte des Demoiselles

Saint Bauzille de Putois

About

The Thaurac massif in the upper valley of the Hérault is home to a network of caves and chasms, of which the Demoiselles Grotto is the largest and most beautiful. Over the centuries, it has served as a refuge for both Catholics and Protestants, and the only means of entry was by descending the sinkhole at the top of the massif. However, a new entry hole was bored into the caves from the foot of the mountains when the caves began to be fitted out for visitors in 1929. This entry hole has made the caves easily accessible. The most well-known abyss in this grotto was named the Cathédrale des Abîmes (Cathedral of the Abysses), or the Salle de la Vierge (Room of the Virgin). There is also an immense cavern. At the center of this cave is an amazingly-formed brilliant white stalagmite. A visit here requires little physical effort and is even suitable for very young children.
