Golra Sharif is a prominent village / town situated near the Margalla Hills, in the Islamabad Capital Territory, Pakistan, at about 520 m above sea level. Golra Sharif is noted for the Shrine of Syed Meher Ali Shah. Geographically, Golra Sharif also has importance. The vast tracts of Margalla Hills and their adjoining plains have been witness to a vast panorama of chequered history. The area extending from Hasan Abdal to the neighbourhood of Taxila, a settlement traced back to 2000 years, is custodian of a rich cultural heritage of pre-Islamic period. Today the archaeological remains dotting the area furnish evidence of the splendid cultural and religious traditions of Buddhist era. Eminent historians of the world agree that it was here that Greek wisdom and Indian civilization meshed together to bring about a synthesis which influenced cultures and art movements everywhere. Hazrat Pir Syed Mehr 'Ali Shah of Golra Sharif ("Hadrat") was a descendent, on his father's side, of Hazrat Syedna Ghaus- e- Azam Shaikh ' Abdul Qadir Jilani in the 25th generation, and of the Holy Prophet of Islam through Syedna Hasan ibn 'Ali in the 38th generation. On the side of his mother, he was descended from Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam in the 24th generation and from the Holy Prophet through Syedna Husain ibn 'Ali in the 37th generation. Hazrat Syed Pir Meher Ali Shah (R.A) was born on Monday, 1st Ramadan, 1275 A.H (14th April 1859 A.D) in Golra Sharif. The time before Hazrat's birth saw the war of independence of 1857 being fought between the British and the Muslims. Those people having belief in Sufism, tasaw'waff and spiritualism, rate this place very high. People from all over the world come here to pay homage to this great pir.
