About
One of the most "folklorically conscious" dining rooms in town occupies an old-world building that was originally built as a tavern around 1800 and has functioned in that capacity ever since. Inside, you'll find one very large dining room whose seating expands during clement weather onto an outdoor terrace, where the views extend out over the other historic buildings of Bregenz's historic core. Come here for the kind of cuisine that many Austrians associate with their grandmothers. Examples include giant Wiener schnitzels; tafelspitz; local fish served with herbs and a white-butter sauce; variations on noodle dishes, including versions with creamy ham and mushroom sauce; roasted beef with onions; and creamy goulash. Dishes that are a bit less obviously associated with the region include grilled turkey in a tomato-flavored Gorgonzola sauce and well-prepared pastas, some made with spinach-flavored tagliatelle. A particular specialty favored by residents of these parts is kisselfleisch, composed of roasted pork served with sauerkraut, braised onions, and herbs.
