In the northeastern extremities of Berlin lies this former Stasi political prison. Although it is not particularly impressive from the outside, the excellent guided tours take you right to the heart of a political climate of paranoia and fear. From the infamous padded cells, described by former inmates who show you around, to the banal décor of the interrogation rooms, these tours contextualize the everpresent threat of persecution in everyday life in the former DDR. By guided tour only. English tours by arrangement from 9am to 6pm or Wednesday and Sunday at 2:30pm. -Justin Davies
