The Canadian National Railway extended its line form Victoria between 1911 and 1919. The passenger service, which ran through the 1920s, became known locally as the Galloping Goose. The rail line was finally abandoned in the 1960s as roads and highways began to reduce the necessity of the trains. Today, the Galloping Goose provides 100 km (60 miles) of wide pathways running from Victoria west to Sooke and north to Swartz Bay on the Saanich Peninsula. This stretch of the railway runs through the heart of Victoria, beginning in the Upper Harbour and continuing 17.92 km (10.75 miles) to Glen Lake, a popular swimming hole. Along the way, you'll pass many other users taking advantage of this wide trail, much of which is paved. This trail is located in Victoria.
