About

The traditions of the place reach the early 1930s. It was then that the students of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts established their avant-garde "Grupa Krakowska" Artistic Association which continued to the year 1937. In 1958 Tadeusz Kantor's Cricot 2 theatre found here a safe haven to continue the operation of the clandestine theatre from the days of World War II. 1958 was also the year of the revival of the "Grupa Krakowska" and of opening of the Association's Gallery in the cellars of the Krzysztofory Palace. The gallery presented abstraction, informel, and surrealist paintings of the group's artists: Maria Jarema, Tadeusz Brzozowski, Jonasz Stern, Janina Kraupe-Świderska, and others. All the facts mentioned here belong to the most significant dates in the history of Polish contemporary art. At present the gallery houses temporary presentations of a variety of modern art forms.
