About

From 13 September 2013 to 5 January 2014, the Amsterdam City Archives presents an expansive photography exhibition from the renowned portrait studio of Jacob Merkelbach (circa 1913 to 1969).A life in photosMore than 40,000 portraits were scanned to display online, showing a stunning variety of subjects. Families, celebrities, animals and Queen Wilhelmina are all included. Highlights are put on show for this exhibition, while historical documents, posters, glass negatives and original cameras give a sense of the craftsmanship and popularity of the studio. Don’t miss the photo of famous Dutch enchantress and spy Mata Hari.Studio portraitsThis sub-exhibition displays a series of studio portraits commissioned by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst for its annual photography assignment. Artists were asked to reflect on the Merkelbach archives and three photographers – Erwin Olaf, Petra Stavast and duo Blommers-Schumm – answered with a unique approach. Olaf developed carbon prints of Amsterdam’s Jewish community. Stavast photographed new and aspiring artists with one of the first mobile phone cameras, the S75. The Blommers-Schumm team took Merkelbach-style portraits created entirely of found objects.[Photo: Joke Busch, 1940]
