About

Fort Bulnes (in Spanish  :  Fuerte Bulnes ) known as Port Famine , is the historic site of an ancient fort located in the region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica , on the peninsula of Brunswick, Chile . The site is 62 km south of Punta Arenas and 2 km north of Puerto del Hambre on the western shore of the Strait of Magellan .
This is a strong founded in 1843 and built on a hill Punta Santa Ana . It is named in honor of Manuel Bulnes Prieto , Chilean politician. The construction of the fort follows the colonization of the southern region of Chile but because of the climate and terrain not conducive to building a city, the fort was abandoned in favor of the current Punta Arenas . It was rebuilt between 1941 and 1943 and declared a national monument in 1968. It is now administered by CONAF .
