About
The Mendocino County Museum, built in 1972, houses local artifacts and exhibits, displaying the rich history and industries that make Mendocino County so uniquely dynamic. Located in the inland town of Willits, the museum also houses the volunteer organization Roots of Motive Power, preserving historic steam powered trains, engines and logging machines, all on display within the museum. Bring the family to explore artifacts from the Frolic Shipwreck of 1850, exhibits and film on local, legendary racehorse Seabiscuit and a fully furnished “Hippie Van.” The museum has also curated displays on the history of the wine industry and unique local businesses and a newly renovated gift shop where you can pick up locally-made artisan treasures like olive oil, candies, stationary, candles, jewelry and more.
