El Quitapenas

Recoleta 1485 Cuisines: American

About

After a long day at the General Cemetary in Santiago's Recoleta neighborhood, there's nothing better than crossing the street for a some good old fashioned sorrow-drowning, Chilean style at Quitapenas. This restaurant and bar is a Santiago classic, for post-funeral and cemetery visit drinking and snacks. In fact the name means "take away your sorrows," and for many people, a visit to the cemetery isn't complete without dropping in here. It's a basic place, tables and chairs, smudged windows and a floor swept clean. They serve Chilean classics like giant sandwiches and cheapish wine of every ilk, and of course, the terremoto, a Chilean drink of unaged wine topped with a splash of Fernet and pineapple icecream. The restaurant is across the street from the General Cemetery at the Cementerios metro and deserves a visit at most times of the day.
