Divaka

41A 6th Septemvri St Cuisines: European

About

Open 24/7, Divaka ("Savage") serves up amazingly large and delicious portions to young Sofians in search of the best bargain this side of the Balkans. The decor is no nonsense -- rough tables and benches in three small rooms with timber archways, as well as a tiny outside area round the back -- and service is at best described as indifferent, but the food is really good. The Divaka sarmi a deliciously spiced mix of rice and minced pork meat, rolled in vine leaves and covered in a creamy dill and garlic sauce, is out of this world, as is the Hungarian Good Woman, finely spiced strips of grilled pork and sliced vegetables, served with hunks of fresh lemon (the serving is big enough for two), or Savage Leg with Savage Sauce, a grilled chicken leg baked with lukanka (spicy Bulgarian sausage), cheese, mushrooms, and onions. There's also a huge choice of Bulgarian salads (big portions), and the vegetarian shish kabob is a hit with noncarnivores.
