About
California’s largest state park, Anza-Borrego , puts on one heck of a spring show, often stretching from February into April (if you’re willing to hike a bit). First-time visitors shouldn’t miss the 3-mile round-trip Palm Canyon Trail, abloom with brittlebush, desert lavender, and ocotillo. For a longer hike, take the 6-mile round-trip route into Hellhole Canyon to search for blooming barrel cactus, lupine, and other desert bloomers; even if you miss peak shows the view of lovely Maidenhair Falls is worth it.
If you’re exploring in a four-wheeler, follow 20-mile Coyote Canyon Jeep Trail and pull over to see sand verbena and dune evening primrose splashing the sand with color. Special guided tours are also offered during wildflower season; call the park for details.
