The Berlin theatre ensemble The Gorillas are masters of the high art of improvisation par excellence. Ten actors and two musicians have been together since 1997 and have wowed their audiences with an unchanged cast since then with their spontaneous shows that develop anew with the audience’s help every time. Over the years The Gorillas have developed other formats to spend the evening alongside classic theatre sport. The ensemble goes “on a cruise” twice a month in its home port of Neukölln and, in accordance with the audience’s wishes, brings a non-stop story to the stage. On Tuesdays in the Kunstfabrik Schlot Jazz Club it’s time for “Gurke oder Banane” (Cucumber or Banana). In this cult show three directors let their actors act and sing in competition with each other. In “Das große 7” (The Big 7) the audience can mercilessly filter out their favourites from the various protagonists in the first half of the programme, who then take on the main roles in a large stage epic in the second half. The Gorillas promote intensive cooperation with improvisation theatres from around the world at the annual IMPRO festival that takes place in spring. Also, in autumn 2009 the German Impro Championship took place for the first time. Many of the troupe’s projects go beyond the normal stage programme, including an impro-school with individual or group seminars and a range of various courses.
