De Goewerneur

Castle of Good Hope

About

One of the Cape's best kept secrets - a first-class restaurant within the ancient walls of the country's oldest colonial building, the Castle of Good Hope. De Goewerneur is situated in several interlinked old rooms that are heavy with history. Artworks by leading South African artists adorn the walls and fireplaces. The old friezes have been redone, but here and there are reminders of the original paintings, protected behind perspex. Lighting up the ancient mood are jaunty touches like tin-can vases, rattan chairs and coir carpets. Punters are offered innovative Cape dishes, interspersed with the traditional. Brilliant lamb kidneys with a herb crust; snoek sambal with moskonfyt; roast haunch of wild boar with forest mushroom ravioli; lamb pumpkin bredie and bobotie are just a few examples of the hearty fare on offer. There's a very dignified wine list with reasonable prices.
