About

If a love of literature brought you to Iceland then a visit to the Culture House is an essential first stop on your discovery of Icelandic literary heritage: especially for enthusiasts of the Eddas and Sagas and those who wish to see the original principle manuscripts. The revered key exhibition, housed within the walls of this beautiful neo-classical building, features a selection of preserved national treasures, including the Sagas of the Icelanders and the Poetic Edda – the latter being the source of J.R.R Tolkien’s dwarves for his famous fantasy epic The Hobbit. The Culture House also features an Old Reading Room with a collection of landmark books dating back to the introduction of printing in the sixteenth century.A guided tour of the Medieval Manuscripts exhibition is offered every weekday except Wednesdays at 3:00 pm. (Mondays and Fridays only during winter). Tours are available at other times for groups of 10 people or more. Art by contemporary artists is on view in the Culture Café and Shop.
