Clipper

The Commodore Cuisines: Seafood, European

About

A meal at Clipper will create a memory - not of dining at a hotel's restaurant, but more likely one of dining on a vast cruise liner. Right down to the waiters wearing navy uniforms, Clipper has a distinctive and unforgettable nautical feel. The feel is of a sprawling, airy space with vast windows on two sides, awash with cane and wood, decorated in browns and navy against white and cream, with plush carpeting and caramel drapes, faux mainstays and pictures of sailing ships. On offer is mostly European fare well balanced with a few South African touches. Starters include Belgian-style mussels, fried triangles of ripe local Brie, and a tower of Franschhoek smoked trout on roesti with caviar. Expect delightful main courses like roast duck glazed with fynbos honey and cider, with a gooseberry or cognac sauce or loin of springbok with tomato and chilli jam. All wines are listed by cultivar or style and the prices are more than reasonable.
