About

Situated in Bernardyńska Street. Initially, the church was a wooden structure erected in 1453 upon the foundation of Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki for the convent of the reformed branch of Franciscans known as Bernardines. In the 2nd half of the 15th century the stone church was erected, but it was destroyed by the Swedish raid in 1655. Today's Baroque church dates back to the years 1659-76, and was constructed according to the design of architect Krzysztof Mieroszewski. It is a three-aisle basilica with transept, dome and two-tower façade. The interior is covered with interesting geometric stucco decoration (1659-80). The main altar and four side altars at the pillars constitute excellent examples of late-Baroque wood carving (1758-66). In the church there are paintings by Franciszek Lekszycki, a Bernardine monk, who assimilated the compositions by Rubens or van Dyck to the Polish art. These are altar paintings completed in the years 1659-64: the Last Supper and Our Lady of the Snow (in the presbytery), the monumental Crucifixion and the Fall under the Cross (in the transept), and St. Anthony of Padua (in the northern aisle). In St. Anne's Chapel one should note the sculpture of Virgin and Child with St. Anne from the workshop of Veit Stoss, and the Danse Macabre painting (3rd quarter of the 17th century). On the northern side of the presbytery there is the Chapel of Blessed Szymon of Lipnica with the marble mausoleum altar (1662). Relics of the Blessed are kept here. The chapel's paintings (17th century) and stained glass window by Józef Mehoffer (1946) depict scenes from his life
