A colossal white statue of Guan-Yin, the goddess of mercy, is Keelung's main tourist attraction. The smiling deity on a mountain is said to be the guiding landmark for incoming ships and visitors. A climb inside to the top of the statue offers a dazzling view of the harbor and mountains. The statue and goddess' temple are enclosed within the manicured grounds of Chung Cheng Park. Every May the city makes this site the centerpiece of its Ghost Festival ceremony.
