Chirk Castle

Completed in 1310 in a commanding position in the Welsh Marches and in continuous habitation ever since, the castle's austere exterior contrasts with the elegant state rooms within. Elaborate plasterwork, tapestries, port and superb Adam-style furniture all help to create a comfortable and intimate atmosphere inside. However, the dramatic dungeon deep under the west range is a reminder that this was a historically a turbulent area, and the castle was twice captured and 'slighted' during the civil war.
