About

The remains of the once spectacular Castle Bernard provide a wealth of material for photographers and artists. Castle Bernard was constructed beyond Bandon in the 16th century. The property was lovingly remodelled in 1815 before it was burnt in 1921 during the Irish "Troubles". It was during dinner that the Countess of Bandon and her husband were surprised by intruders. The couple and their dinner guests were commanded to leave their home before it was torched and destroyed. Dramatically, the Countess sang "God Save the Queen" as she watched Castle Bernard, and her way of life, being extinguished.
