Casa de Stewart

About

Corporal Jose Manuel Machado of the Mexican army constructed this clapboard-covered adobe house for his daughter Rosa who had married the American soldier John C. Stewart after the United States and Mexico had mended their otherwise antagonistic relationship. Stewart and the home are both described in Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s best seller Two Years Before the Mast. No one knows of the exact dates when the house was constructed; but since Dana's book took place between 1834-36, during one of his trips around Cape Horn, the house was probably built in the early 1830s. - Erick Pettersen
