The Casa Colorada (Red House) is regarded as the best-preserved colonial structure in Santiago, having survived devastating earthquakes and the whims of modern developers. The structure was built between 1769 and 1779 as a residence for the first president of Chile, Mateo de Toro y Zambrano. Inside, the missable (unless you have kids to entertain) Santiago Museum depicts the urban history of the city until the 19th century using amateurish scale models. Still, architecturally, the Casa Colorada is worth a look, and you can grab lunch or a coffee at Ambrosía behind the museum. There is also a visitor center with information about Santiago here.
