About
That Robert Louis Stevenson sure knew a good view.
The one-time Calistoga resident's favorite spot: the top of 4,342-foot Mount St. Helena, the tallest peak in Napa County. The peak is the Holy Grail for local hikers and visitors in the know, a world of blooming madrone trees and meadows lush with purple vetch and orange and gold poppies. A grueling, 10-mile round-trip hike to the top starts in (appropriately named) Robert Louis Stevenson State Park and climbs from there. Views from the summit are spectacular; in addition to the entire San Francisco Bay Area, on a clear day they stretch north to Mt. Shasta.
