About
Chefs Michael and Dana Pastula have had a host of Cafe O'Lei restaurants on Maui (in Makawao, Lahaina, Maalaea, and Napili), and I've loved every one of them. Their latest (in addition to the Maalaea Grill) is in an out-of-the-way location, the not-very-attractive Rainbow Mall. Never mind -- you come here for the food, not the view (which is of congested Kihei Rd and a small bit of ocean between the fence of high-rise condos across the street). Inside, the open and airy room has floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, a big circular bar in the middle, and, on one side, an exhibition kitchen. The atmosphere is relaxing and inviting. The food is, as usual, not only outstanding, but also a real bargain. You can't beat lunch with fresh fish, rice, and salad for under $12 (arrive early, as the locals will book all the tables in advance). Dinners range from fresh fish to prime rib, mac-nut-crusted chicken breast to roast duck, and even a mushroom-asparagus-pine-nut linguine for the vegetarians. Save room for dessert, such as pineapple upside-down cake or a fudge-brownie sundae (yum, yum). Note: Additional Cafe O'Lei restaurants in Wailuku on N. Market Street and at The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course.
