About
The Bombay Castle was built by the British on the same location where a Portuguese manor once stood, after they took possession of the island. The ruins of the old manor and a Portuguese sundial are still visible. The Governor of Bombay oversaw the construction and fortification of this castle. This building is the only surviving fortification of the larger Bombay Fort or St. George Fort. After the British established themselves firmly, the castle came to be known as Manor House. The building is now in the INS Angre and houses the Flag Officer Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy and is known as Naval Barracks.
