The day hike from Laguna Quilotoa to Chugchilan is one of the best in Ecuador. It takes about 5 hours at a leisurely pace. Don't be fooled it is a hard hike and a guide is recommended. From Chugchilan hire a truck to take you up to Quilotoa by road for US$25, it takes about an hour. A local guide from Chugchilan goes with you for US$10 for the group for the day. It is recommended to tip your guide if you like the service provided. There is a US$2 entry fee per person at the Laguna. The hike stays on the crater rim for about an hour with fantastic views, then descends to the Indigenous village of Guayama and then crosses the Rio Sihui Canyon.
