About

It has taken over 60 years, but Berlin can finally boast a Jewish theatre once again, which opened in 2001. Its founder, Dan Lahav, addresses audiences of all cultures and ages with his programme - a theatre for everyone interested in Jewish culture, folklore and tradition. The programme presents works by Jewish greats like Friedrich Holländer, Kurt Tucholsky, Georg Kreisler and Heinrich Heine. On cabaret and music evenings, poetry, songs and satire take centre stage, and classical Eastern Jewish theatre and contemporary pieces from Israel go hand in hand in this theatre’s programme. Some highly original special events here go far beyond the traditional spoken theatre. The play series ‘Schabat Schalom - Friday night at home with a Jewish family’ (Schabat Schalom - ein Freitagabend bei einer jüdischen Familie) is a fixed part of the schedule, and conveys ‘Judaism close up’. And not to forget: Bimah also hosts summer festivals and premieres for its open-minded audiences. The theatre was previously known as ‘Bamah’ (Hebrew for ‘stage’) and was located first in Wilmersdorf, later in Charlottenburg. From 2006 till 2011, the Bimah (Hebrew for ‘centre stage’) took up residence in an old ballroom in the Neukölln district. Since Autumn 2011 it is to be found in the Admiralspalast at Friedrichstraße. juedisches [dot] theaterberlinweb [dot] de The Willy Brandt Foundation commemorates the former German chancellor History will be made, without pausing for breath!
