About Bellary

Bellary also known as 'Ballary' is a famous district located in the state of Karnataka. This town got its name from the word Balari which usually refers to goddess Durugamma. As goddess Durugamma had manifested herself in the town that makes it a dwelling of the goddess. According to the folklore, there are many events which are related to the great epic Ramayana and are concerned with this place. It is also said as per the myths that while Rama was searching for Sita, met Sugreeva and Hanuman at a place near Hampi. According to history, this place has played significant role during Satavahanas, Kadambas, Chalukyas of Kalyana, Kalachuryas, Sevunas, and Hoysalas' period. Perched on top of the Fort Hill or Bellary Gudda is the Bellary Fort, which was constructed by Hande Hanumappa Nayaka, around the hill during the period of Vijaynagara Empire. The British has constructed many buildings during the period of the colonial rule. Despite some modifications, these structures have retained their original architecture. The eastern base of the hill is the lower fort, which is measured about half a mile in length including a barrack and an armoury. Kumbara Gudda, is the sister of Bellary Hill and is known by another name - Face Hill as well. It has received such a name due to the southeast view of this hill, which bears resemblance to the side angle of a human face. Upper Fort has a citadel on the peak at a height of 1,976 feet secured by three exterior lines of fortification. This upper part is a polygon that doesn't have arrangements for a garrison. The children park and zoo of Bellary was established in 1981. Bellary Gudda, with a perimeter of approximately 3.2 km and a height of 480 ft is the World's second biggest monolithic mount. This graveyard was built as a memorial to the soldiers of Turkey. The small garden of Turkish Martyrs Graveyard is located close to the airstrip where the Turkish soldiers were buried.
