About
Batu Caves is located in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, approximately seven miles north. It is a sacred site for devotees of the Hindu faith in Malaysia, and also a popular tourist attraction. Batu Caves is more than a century old, and devotees need to climb 272 steps before reaching the temple. Thaipusam festival is celebrated annually in the Batu Caves, whereby as many as 800,000 devotees and other visitors may throng the caves. A sight to behold is - as a form of sacrifice, devotees will carry "kavadis" - where large, beautifully decorated frameworks are attached to the body (skin, cheeks, tongue, etc) using metal hooks. It is believed that the Gods will then provide blessings and answer the devotees' prayers.
