Anbu Hospital emerged as the vision of Dr. G.C. Anbunathan and Dr. Ranjitham Anbunathan to serve the poor in Madurai. Dr. G.C. Anbunathan, a Diabetologist first started his private practice in 1960 at Anbunathan Clinic in the East Veli street and Dr. Ranjitham Anbunthan, a gynaecologist practiced in 1950 at Manickam Clinic serving hundreds of women who did not have the privilege for primary health care in the early 60s. Touched by the suffering of number of people, the Anbu Nursing Home emerged in Teppakulam. The Anbu Hospital, as it is known now, was started initially as a healthcare awareness effort which later came to be erected in 1971 as the first hospital of its kind in the Teppakulam area.
