American University Cairo Bookstore

Main campus, American University in Cairo

About

Well stocked and well run, the main branch is the best place in Cairo to look for nonfiction (though it has a pretty impressive popular-literature section), including guidebooks and background information on Egypt. It also stocks everything printed by the AUC Press, which includes an impressive list of Egyptian authors in translation (including, of course, Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz). When visiting the main branch, enter the AUC campus through the Mohamed Mahmoud entrance (across from McDonald's), and be prepared to leave some form of ID with security at the gate. The Zamalek Branch, 16 Mohamed Thakeb St. (tel. 02/37397045), is located in considerably smaller quarters underneath the AUC hostel, but is still a good place for general-interest books and guidebooks. Both stores are open Saturday to Thursday 9am to 6pm; the Zamalek branch is also open Friday 1 to 6pm.
