For Americans living in Geneva, a trip to the American Market, a shop specializing in American food near the Cornavin Train Station, is an emotional experience. In the 40 square meters of the two-level store, Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix rubs shoulders with Bisquick, Oreos share company with Reese Peanut butter Cups, and Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice holds court. For those moments in life when all the chocolate in Switzerland won't comfort as well as a fluffernutter (a peanut butter and marshmallow cream sandwich), this is the place to go. The idea for the store took root when Mr. Brandt and his partner, Jacques Turian, two thirty-something Swiss devotees of American food, were struck by the passion with which their American friends pined for pumpkin pie, brownies and the like. Sensing a need that has thus far been catered to on a very limited scale in Geneva, the idea for an American food store began to take shape. Products like Cheese Whiz and Velveeta sold out almost overnight and the place is now busy at all times. They have created an old-fashioned general store atmosphere, including a Coke machine from the 1950s that still works.
