Alster
About
As a result of damming up a tributary of the River Elbe in the 13th century, Alster is now an essential chunk of the cityscape that affords Hamburg an unrivaled ambiance. Divided into Binnenalster (Inner Alster) and AuÃenalster (Outer Alster), the former covers an area of 18 hectares, and is bordered on by three walkways, Jungfernstieg, Neuer Jungfernstieg, and the Ballindamm; while the latter spans a total of 160 hectares, and is almost completely bounded by lush trees and a park.
