Aitxiar

Calle María Muñoz 8 Cuisines: Spanish

About

Well respected for its good food, low prices, and utter lack of pretension, this restaurant in the Casco Viejo serves Basque cuisine in two dining rooms in a house built in the 1930s. Expect a decor that includes lots of exposed stone and wood, a somewhat hysterical waitstaff, strong flavors, and lots of regional pride. Menu items include potato soup with chunks of fresh tuna, and an array of fish hauled in that morning from nearby waters. Two of the most appealing are hake, which tastes marvelous in an herb-infused green sauce, and cod, prepared in at least two versions. Baby squid is a savory choice, as are the spicy sausages (chuletas), which are best consumed as an appetizer.
