Formerly headquarters of the Hong Kong marine police, 1881 Heritage now features a shopping mall, hotel and exhibition hall. In 1994, several of the buildings including the former marine police headquarters and stable block were declared monuments by the Antiquities and Monuments Office as proof of their historical significance. 1881 Heritage added functionality to an old heritage building preserving features such as: The bomb shelter underneath the site has been preserved as the passageway leading to the Heritage Hall, offering visitors a glimpse of what the old bomb shelter looked like. The round house (Time ball tower). In the old days, a time ball mounted on the pole above the domed roof was raised manually everyday and dropped at 1pm to enable ships in the port to see the descent of the time ball and set their chronometers accordingly. Next to the Time ball tower is a typhoon mast where signals were raised manually during typhoons. A giant nautical chart of Hong Kong covers the piazza floor, highlighting Hong Kong's history as a shipping port. The best part for shopaholics is that 1881 Heritage features many of the leading international brands in fine jewellery and watches, gifts and designer fashion. Cartier, Tiffany & Co, Piaget, Van Cleef and Arpels, Shanghai Tang opened flagship stores and now its a suite of dining and entertainment. Hullet House, located in the Main building, is a heritage tourism facility where you'll find touristy bars, restaurants and pubs.
