About the trip

Kenya is the homeland of Elsa the Lioness and her sisters, Big One and Lustica. The story behind her birth and upbringing was the reason conservancy for particularly big cats and other animals in general became a big thing in the country. Started by Joy and George Adamson who became the wardens for the lions and the land they lived in, through this 10-day trip we’ll take you through the real places that became the settings in the “Born Free” book and documentary. Elsa spent a huge chunk of her life in Shaba National Reserve and later spent her last days in Meru National Park, where we can visit the Grave of Elsa and some of Joy’s ashes was spread over. We’ll also visit the Great Rift Valley, and stay in Elsamere at Lake Naivasha which is the former home of Joy and George Adamson. We’ll also visit Lake Nakuru National Park from here, before finally spending several days in Masai Mara National Reserve. There will be several game drives in all the parks that we’re visiting where we can spot anything from the Big 5 to the rarer species, such as the white rhinos, black rhinos, reticulated giraffes, elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and in Nakuru, you can spot many pink flamingos, hippos, waterbucks, and more.

Day 2: Transfer From Nairobi To Shaba National Reserve With Evening Game Drive

  • After breakfast at the hotel, we check-out and leave Nairobi. Our first destination is Shaba National Reserve. As we make our way into the Isiolo County, we’ll see the surroundings change to flat, savannah plains best know for big cats that reside here. The national reserve is changes from dry plains to lush green grasslands depending on the weather and is located near the Samburu National Reserve and is bigger in comparison.
  • We will arrive in time for lunch at Shaba Sarova Lodge. Enjoy the feast before we check-in and drop our luggage and rest. The reserve allows wildlife to freely roam throughout the three adjoining reserves in northern Kenya, including the Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserve, and became well-known after George and Joy Adamson wrote and filmed “Born Free.” It is also the second home of Elsa, the lioness.
  • In the evening, we’ll set off for a game viewing drive session around the reserve. Shaba is well known for the large prides of lions, cheetahs, and leopards and it’s easy to spot them traveling as smaller familiars or as a whole pride. You can also see reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and other species. Shaba is also known for the colourful bird species including the vulturine guinea fowl, D’Arnaud’s barbet and many more.
  • Enjoy the ride and we’ll head back to the camp as the sun sets and in time for dinner and to spend the night here.
  • (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

Day 3: Shaba National Reserve Evening Game Viewing Drive

  • We’ll head out by 6.30 AM to catch nocturnal animals going about their life and catching their last prey of the day before retreating back to their nests and burrows on an early morning game drive. Catching glimpses of these subtle animals can be rather tricky, but it’s still a worthwhile trip as they’re on our way to catch a view of the sunrise. By 8.30 AM, we’ll be back at the camp for a buffet breakfast, and we’ll leave you spend the day at your own pace, whether it’s to catch more sleep before lunch or to explore the area around.
  • A buffet lunch takes place at 12.30 PM, and you’ll have time to spend on your own to walk around the vicinity and maybe visit nearby attractions before the evening game drive. From the camp, we’ll head out at 4 PM for a game drive through the park to catch glimpses of the games in the afternoon. Enjoy the ride and we’ll head back to the camp as the sun sets and in time for dinner and to spend the night here.
  • (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

Day 4: Transfer From Shaba National Reserve To Meru National Park With Game Drive

  • Enjoy your breakfast in Shaba before we set out from the lodge for Meru National Park. Located in the north of Meru, this is one of the more popular national parks with higher rainfalls than most, creating a lush, swampy green areas loved by animals. This area protects a key area of the ecosystem that’s part of the Tana River, and is highly linked to other parks and reserves.
  • It’s also another setting that became the inspiration to the book and movie by George and Joy Adamson, Born Free. The world was informed and educated through the critically acclaimed work that inspired many to take more responsibilities in wildlife protection particularly in the East Africa area. Elsa the lioness was later buried in this park and Joy’s ashes were scattered on her gravesite.
  • We’ll arrive at Rhino River Camp at noon, just in time for lunch. After checking-in, rest at the camp before we hop on an afternoon game drive. Common species that can be found while on your game drive here are the zebras, white rhinos, black rhinos, hartebeests, and the big cats such as the lions, African wild cats, cheetahs and leopards. About 427 species of birds have been found here, and snake enthusiasts can hope to spot some pythons or puff adders at the jungle.

  • We’ll then head out to visit the Grave of Elsa the Lioness. Elsa dried prematurely after suffering from a common malaria-like big cat disease, the tick-borne blood disease babesiosis. While she’s unfortunately passed away young, she had several cubs and they’ve become one of the oldest prides in Meru.

The luxurious lodge is located next to the beautiful freshwater lake of Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha.
  • We can take our time marvelling at the beauty of this place and learn just what kind of warm home Joy & George used to live in. Spend your after at leisure around Lake Naivasha. The name translates in the local Maasai name as rough water due to the volatile weather and sudden storms are often observed in this area. It is slightly higher than Lake Nakuru and is seated at 1.8km above sea level.
  • If Lake Nakuru is a perfect spot to view wildlife, Lake Navisha offers a different experience where visitors can take a boat ride and take the observation closer than ever.
